Northerner Exotec on track to become world leader in robotic logistics

Hauts-de-France-made robotic systems hit the international market

Exotec, the start-up born in 2015 in Croix, in the Lille area, has raised an outstanding $335 million dollars. The company is now valued at $2 billion, propelling it to 25th position in the unicorn rankings and number 1 in the industrial sector. Unicorns are privately owned start-ups valued at over $1 billion.

Exotec specialises in intralogistics, developing robots and software for automated inventory storage allowing warehouse space maximisation. The use of robots exploits a human-robot synergy enabling companies to quadruple logistics productivity.

Skypods are Exotec’s flagship product. They can reach goods at heights of up to 12 metres, maximising storage space and increasing density in warehouses.

“A priority for our clients is to build high-performing, agile supply chains which means rethinking their logistic flows. Our solutions are designed to meet these key challenges and overcome manpower shortages in warehouses. Exotec promotes a collaborative approach between humans and robots, increasing warehouse productivity while improving working conditions.” Romain Moulin, CEO and co-founder, Exotec.

The e-commerce sector is booming since the start of the global pandemic. Exotec, with its strong track record, is ideally positioned to seize this opportunity in the warehouse automation market. More than 30 leading brands in the food, retail, manufacturing and outsourced logistics sectors are already using Exotec’s solutions. Patapam’s warehouse in Cambrai is a showcase for the start-up’s robotisation.

This latest round of funding will allow the company, which is already well-established in Japan, to drive its international development. Exotec has large-scale recruitment in the pipeline. The company aims to double its workforce from 350 to 700 employees by 2023. By 2025, another 500 engineers will be taken on by the unicorn’s R&D branch in Croix, Hauts-de-France.

Success rooted in the Hauts-de-France ecosystem

Exotec’s success highlights the Hauts-de-France region’s industrial and logistic strengths.

The region is steeped in industrial heritage and know-how. It regularly tops the podium for incoming industrial investment. 10% of all French engineers are trained at high-ranking schools in Hauts-de-France.

The Hauts-de-France is a European logistics hub: its strategic geographic location and outstanding infrastructure places it at the centre of transport flows.

Companies united by the Euralogistic hub forge synergies with innovation and training to stay ahead of the competition.

The region continues to attract major companies that choose to base their French and European logistics operations here: Häagen Dazs, Orchestra, Morgan, Babyliss, BigBen, and Decathlon, to name but a few.
