Oxia Initiative: SaaS serving the decarbonization
of the economy and regions

Oxia Initiative is a Canadian company, founded by Emmanuelle Tavernier in 2018.

The company brings together the decarbonization ecosystem on a single platform, which benefits everyone involved:

  • Companies (SMEs/mid-sized companies) that need to reduce their carbon impact
“SMEs will help us reduce our carbon impact. Large corporations already have all the necessary resources.”
  • CleanTechs that can assist these companies in their transition
  • Investment funds looking to identify companies willing to take on the challenge of reducing carbon emissions
  • Local authorities and regions facing major transition challenges and seeking to accelerate decarbonization while fostering the circular economy within their communities.

If we pool our data, we’ll be able to make much faster and more consistent decarbonization decisions. Thanks to this collaboration, we can achieve decarbonization at scale.
Emmanuelle Tavernier, Founder and CEO

An innovative self-financing model for collective decarbonization

For small and medium-sized businesses, the initial assessment phase can be very costly.

It often represents a major barrier to decarbonization.

That is why Oxia Initiative has chosen to operate through clusters:

  • financial clusters
  • accelerator clusters
  • regional clusters

The organizations sponsoring these clusters cover the cost of the audit, enabling every company within their network to receive their ESG report free of charge.

As a result, businesses only invest in the decarbonization of their operations, through initiatives that generate a return within one to three years.

The savings and gains achieved can then be reinvested into new development projects or more advanced decarbonization initiatives.

Centralizing data to share solutions on a global scale

Oxia Initiative’s mission is to collect as much information as possible from the companies it supports.

This encrypted data is then used to generate automated, tailor-made decarbonization plans for businesses around the world.

Once we have enough data on who is polluting, where, when, and how, we will be able to use reverse engineering to automatically generate decarbonization plans tailored to each company’s budget, location, and operating environment.
After all, an aluminum SME in Canada faces the same Scope 3 decarbonization challenges as a similar business in the Hauts-de-France region or anywhere else in the world, especially in a geopolitical climate where energy-related issues have become increasingly strategic.

Emmanuelle Tavernier, Founder of Oxia Initiative

France: Oxia Initiative’s first
international expansion

In 2024, Emmanuelle Tavernier set out to enter the European market.

I had considered Luxembourg and Switzerland because there were major opportunities there. But I really wanted to return to France because of my roots.
And what began as a personal choice ultimately turned out to be an incredibly strategic business decision.

She chose to establish the company in Beauvais, in the Hauts-de-France region. For the French entrepreneur living abroad, it was both a return to her roots and a strategic move for her business.

Twenty years after leaving France, she was struck by how much the region had evolved.

When I came back to Beauvais, I discovered the entire ecosystem that exists here. I was impressed.

In Beauvais and across the region, she found:

  • Recognized talent in ESG and environmental fields, eager to join a mission-driven scale-up
    🔎 Recruit easily in Hauts-de-France
  • An exceptional location, connected to the whole of Europe, ideal for expanding across Europe with five capital cities that can be reached in just a few hours by train and Paris-Beauvais Airport serving as a gateway to Europe
  • Competitive real estate and labor costs, less than an hour from Paris
  • A remarkably open-minded business culture
  • A thriving innovation ecosystem in bioeconomy and circular economy
“For me, Beauvais’ greatest strength is the genuine momentum around pragmatic innovation and the world of tomorrow.”
  • A high-potential market supported by a dense industrial base which faces significant carbon-related challenges and is highly committed to the transition. This is all perfectly aligned with Oxia’s core target market and its ambition to build a regional cluster in Hauts-de-France.

Beyond the region’s economic advantages, Emmanuelle Tavernier also highlights the quality of life the region has to offer.

I considered Paris, but after spending 17 years in Canada surrounded by vast lakes and forests, I can’t imagine living in a major capital city. However, Beauvais is just on the outskirts of Paris. I don’t need to live in Paris to do business there. That’s the advantage of the Hauts-de-France region.

I’m rediscovering France, and it really is an incredible country. It has it all: mountains, forests, the sea and the ocean, culture, great food, great wine, and business opportunities too!

Strong international growth
ambitions

Oxia centralizes data. To go further, we must identify existing solutions around the world and integrate them into our AI systems, to improve our models, and deliver automated, cost-effective decarbonization plans. International expansion has been part of Oxia’s DNA since day one.

Oxia Initiative has now established a presence in both North America and Europe. Within the next two years, the company aims to expand:

  • Into Asia, where many SMEs have yet to begin their decarbonization journey, amid a rapidly evolving regulatory landscape
  • Into the Middle East, a market with significant financing opportunities, a dynamic CleanTech ecosystem, and a structural need to diversify beyond fossil fuels

Support from Nord France Invest
and the Invest in Hauts-de-France network

In Hauts-de-France, I found genuine synergy between all the organizations involved in supporting business expansion. They provided us with continuous guidance and support throughout the process.

Oxia Initiative was introduced to Nord France Invest by Business France Canada, and has received support from the Hauts-de-France region and the Communauté d’Agglomération du Beauvaisis.

The company has benefited from collaborative support across five key areas:

  • Finding office space as part of a soft-landing program
  • Handling the administrative process of setting up its French entity
  • Recruiting its first employee
  • Building its partner network
  • Securing funding opportunities

When you set up in New York or Chicago, it’s purely business. Here in Hauts-de-France, you do business with a sense of friendship.

Four questions
for Emmanuelle Tavernier

What does the name Oxia Initiative mean, and what values does it represent?

Having spent so much time in both France and other countries, I am curious about how France is perceived internationally.

France is clearly seen as a country of expertise and craftsmanship. There is a certain elegance here that is admired internationally, everything is beautiful.

From a business perspective, France is already regarded as a global leader in climate change and environmental issues. In France, we sometimes feel that we are not doing enough, and I agree that we can still do more. However, compared to the rest of the world, we are making significant progress.

Is there a stereotype about working in France that you would like to challenge?

Overseas, investors often think of the French as people who work less and take long vacations. What I have noticed, however, is that when French people work, they are extremely productive.

What advice would you give to an investor looking to set up shop in the Hauts-de-France region?

Before investing in France, it is important to choose the right region. The differences between regions can be significant in terms of skills, labor markets, and even mindset. Therefore, it is essential to align your investment strategy with the region’s specific needs, as well as your own lifestyle preferences.

Many companies hesitate to set up their business in France because of the complex administrative procedures. But with the kind of support I received from Nord France Invest, that is no longer a concern. My advice would therefore be to reach out to local business expansion support organizations.
