Octopus Energy has chosen the Hauts-de-France region

as the base from which to accelerate its expansion

From London to Hauts-de-France:
Octopus Energy’s vision for France

Octopus Energy was launched in London in 2016 and quickly established itself as one of the key players in the renewable energy sector. It is continuing to expand rapidly across Europe.

🔎Learn more about Hauts-de-France, a region with a promising future for your business in the energy sector.

Following its acquisition of Plüm Énergie in 2022, it is now France’s fourth-largest energy supplier.

This rapid expansion has raised a strategic question: how can the company support such strong growth in its workforce whilst remaining close to its customers and connected to its head office in London?

Two additional sites in the Hauts-de-France region
to support Octopus Energy's growth

To support its growth in France, Octopus Energy was looking for a region that met several criteria:

  • excellent accessibility within Europe
  • a large pool of skilled workers
  • recognized expertise in customer relations
  • an environment committed to the energy transition.

After conducting an in-depth analysis of potential sites in several cities, such as Reims, Le Mans and Lille, the company decided to locate its future operations in the Hauts-de-France region.

In addition to focusing this expansion outside of Paris on a single site, Octopus has opted for two additional sites in the region.

This approach meets two distinct needs:

  • Expansion of the company’s business operations in Lille to meet the sharp increase in customer numbers.
  • Development of the photovoltaic sector in Amiens in response to the upswing in the solar market.

Lille, a strategic hub for driving business growth

Octopus Energy set up operations in Lille in the fall of 2023 with two employees.

Just three years later, the site has 250 employees, demonstrating the importance of the Lille office to the Group’s strategy.

This office is home to several functions that are key to the company’s growth:

  • Sales teams
  • Telesales
  • Sales administration
  • Field sales
  • Customer service
  • Service teams
  • Collections

Presently, it is Octopus Energy’s main regional office and could eventually become the company’s primary office in France.

The decision in favor of Lille came down to 3 key factors:

The Hauts-de-France region’s leading reputation in customer service roles and the availability of skilled workers were two key factors that gave the company the confidence to proceed with its plan for rapid workforce expansion.

🔎Recruit qualified candidates in the Hauts-de-France region

“The Hauts-de-France region is France’s leading region for customer relations and is home to global leaders in the sector. This ensures strong networks and proven expertise.”
Céline Stein, CEO of Octopus Energy France

Amiens, a center of expertise dedicated to photovoltaics

The growth of the company’s photovoltaic business also requires an organizational structure capable of combining a logistics platform with a training center.

The Amiens site therefore provides a solution to an industrial and technical challenge.

The city stood out thanks to:

  • its industrial expertise
  • its good accessibility
  • a well-established ecosystem in technologies related to the energy transition.

These strengths enable Octopus Energy to manage its solar equipment in-house while developing the skills needed to scale up this area of activity.

Opened in 2024, the facility—which employs about 15 people—includes a warehouse and a training center for solar panel installers.

The facilities replicate various roof and electrical system configurations, enabling technicians to train under conditions that closely resemble those on real construction sites.

According to Octopus Energy, no other installer on the French market currently offers a training environment of this caliber.

From its base in Amiens, the company also handles logistics for equipment destined for projects in the Hauts-de-France region, as well as in northern Normandy and the Île-de-France region.

🔎Optimize the flow of your logistics operations from the Hauts-de-France region

“The Hauts-de-France region is not merely a great location in terms of geography, but a genuine partner in terms of growth and a driver for transformation.  The region offers the perfect combination: ultra-fast access to Europe (with the Paris and London hubs right on its doorstep), a pool of highly qualified skilled workers, a concrete commitment by the region to the green transition, and, above all, a welcoming atmosphere, a strong sense of community and a unique team spirit.“

A location that supports
exceptional growth

The new location in the Hauts-de-France region is part of a phase aimed at accelerating the expansion of Octopus Energy in France.

In just three years, the company has grown from 50,000 to 750,000 customers, prompting it to rapidly expand its teams and operational capacity.

The company is now aiming to reach one million customers by 2027.

This goal will require new recruitment, particularly in Lille.

These two new locations exemplify the Group’s strategy in France: to simultaneously expand its sales capabilities, strengthen the quality of its customer relationships and invest in the skills needed for the energy transition.

This decision supports the company’s current growth while laying the groundwork for the next stages of its expansion.

What the example of Octopus Energy demonstrates
for international investors

Octopus Energy’s decision to establish itself in the Hauts-de-France region demonstrates the area’s ability to respond to the challenges faced by fast-growing companies:

  • The availability of skilled labor
  • High value-added service functions
  • An environment conducive to rapid growth

The project illustrates the value of a regional approach that combines several sites with complementary functions.

Last but not least, it highlights the importance of the human factor in investment decisions.

The Group highlights the strength of the regional ecosystem, its collaboration with local employment stakeholders, the culture of service and the quality of life offered by the Hauts-de-France region.
