Hydrovolt: a new plant in Hauts-de-France
to expand in Europe

Founded in 2020 by Hydro, a Norwegian company and world leader in aluminum production, and Northvolt, a Swedish manufacturer of state-of-the-art batteries, Hydrovolt is an innovative company in the battery recycling sector.

It’s aim: to create a sustainable, circular value chain for batteries in Europe in response to the environmental and economic challenges of the fast-growing electric mobility sector.

In July 2024, Hydrovolt announced its future plant in Hauts-de-France, in the heart of Europe’s “Battery Valley”.

A strategic choice for the Group, which will help strengthen the value chain for electric mobility and batteries in France and Europe.

This decision reflects the region’s growing appeal to international investors in this sector, and reinforces Hauts-de-France’s position at the heart of Europe’s green revolution.

Find out why you should consider the French market for your development in the electric mobility sector.

A gradual development

This first facility outside Norway marks the beginning of the Group’s expansion in Europe.

Hydrovolt plans to invest progressively, starting with:

  • the collection
  • the discharging & energy recovery of electric vehicle and industrial batteries
  • the dismantling of battery packs

At the same time, the Group is continuing to explore the possibility of establishing further facilities in Europe by 2030.

Setting up: discover how to conduct a systematic location analysis

The project specifications
An optimal ecosystem for battery recycling:

Hydrovolt needs to be able to source batteries for recycling and resell the materials produced (recycled aluminum and black mass). This is why proximity to battery producers, car manufacturers, partners and potential customers is so important.

A well-developed, easily accessible freight network

Direct access to a highway and a rail connection (less than 6 miles) to facilitate the movement of goods.

Specific features

Faced with the need to get up and running quickly, the company decided to focus its search on brownfield sites (set up at an existing site). The proposed buildings had to be over 23 ft (7.5 m) high to meet technical production requirements.

Limiting the ecological impact

In order to limit its carbon footprint, Hydrovolt wanted to ensure that the various stakeholders in its value chain are located close to each other, as well as being supplied with green energy.
