FertigHy to set up its European low-carbon fertilizer plant

in Hauts-de-France

FertigHy, a new European producer of low-carbon fertilizers, has chosen Languevoisin-Quiquery, in the Somme department, as the location for its first European plant. This large-scale industrial project aims to produce 1,500 tons of carbon-free calcium ammonium nitrate per day and aims to reduce CO₂ emissions by one million tons annually. FertigHy, the company that is revolutionizing
fertilizer production

Founded in June 2023, FertigHy is the result of a collaboration between six major European companies: InnoEnergy, RIC Energy, MAIRE, Siemens Financial Services, InVivo, and HEINEKEN.

With this consortium, they’re aiming to gradually transform the European fertilizer industry and reduce its carbon footprint.

The name “FertigHy” is significant—it combines “fertilizer” and “hydrogen,” which perfectly sums up the company’s mission.

This initiative aims to develop local production of low-carbon fertilizers, thereby strengthening industrial sovereignty and supply autonomy for European farmers while contributing to the decarbonization of our food chain.

FertigHy has chosen Languevoisin-Quiquery in Hauts-de-France
for its European expansion

After conducting a European location study, Fertighy has announced its decision to set up in Languevoisin-Quiquery. Several strategic advantages convinced the company’s executives to choose this town in the Somme department:

  • A strategic location: at the heart of a major fertilizer consumption basin due to its agricultural and industrial activities, particularly in the agri-food sector, which is mindful of the carbon footprint of its products.
  • The right logistics, with the right industrial environment: Languevoisin is the leading grain port on the Canal du Nord. The plant will also be located near the Nesle agro-industrial hub. And lastly, its central location within the Seine-Scheldt river network and the future Seine-Nord Europe canal provides direct access to inland ports and the main ports of the Northern Range (Dunkirk, Le Havre, Antwerp).
  • Significant energy capacity: access to 240 MW of electrical power thanks to proximity to the RTE grid, according to the production scenario

Location was a key factor in our decision to set up here. The proximity to the Canal du Nord and the future Canal Seine-Nord Europe presents strategic logistics opportunities, while the possibility of a high-capacity electrical connection meets our industrial needs. Integration within an agri-logistics platform fosters essential local synergies. In addition, we have chosen an area that is seeking economic growth and is well suited to hosting a project of this scale. The Hauts-de-France region represents a major consumer market for mineral fertilizers and has a tradition of cooperation between the agricultural sector and industry, which is a key asset for our development.

Thomas Habas, Senior Project Manager, FertigHy

Key figures for the project:

  • Production of 50,000 tons/year of low-carbon nitrogen fertilizers in France
  • A 200MW electrolyzer for low-carbon hydrogen production
  • Up to 1 million tons of CO2 avoided per year
  • Approximately 20 hectares of land
  • Creation of 250 direct jobs and an estimated 700 indirect jobs
  • An estimated €1.3 billion investment

This new plant in Hauts-de-France is part of a global industrial vision, with commissioning scheduled for 2030.

Technological innovation is at the heart of the project, notably thanks to the integration of an electrolyzer for the production of green hydrogen, which radically decarbonizes the industrial process.

Regional support
for the project

This project is part of a deeply collaborative dynamic, one that has mobilized a large number of institutional, economic, and regional stakeholders.

Key partners include Business France, the Directorate-General for Enterprise (DGE), the Prefecture of the Somme, the Hauts-de-France Regional Directorate for Employment, Training, Entrepreneurship, and Skills (DREETS), the Hauts-de-France Region, the DDTM, the Eastern Somme Community of Municipalities, NORIAP, as well as the expertise of several independent consultants.

Also involved are: RTE, the Seine-Nord Europe Canal Company, NaTran, the Caisse des Dépôts et des Consignations, and France Travail.

Nord France Invest contributed to the realization of this large-scale project by providing its local expertise:

  • Help in finding sites that meet specific technical requirements
  • Establishing contacts with the relevant local ecosystem
  • Support with administrative procedures in collaboration with government agencies

NFI facilitated interaction with regional services, local elected officials, and regional businesses and stakeholders such as SCSNE, Banque des Territoires, and Pôlénergie, to name a few. The agency identified several potential locations, including two regional sites that precisely met our specifications: Cambrai E-Valley and Languevoisin-Quiquery. It has supported us throughout the process and is still doing so through regular discussions with government agencies.

Economic calendar and outlook

The operational schedule for the project is structured around three major phases:

  • 2024-2026: Project development
  • 2027: Start of construction work
  • 2030: Full operational commissioning

At the same time, FertigHy is actively pursuing the structuring of its supply chain and the optimization of technological solutions to maximize its environmental efficiency.

This major setting-up is fully in line with the collective Rev3 initiative, led by the Hauts-de-France Region and its partners, for a more sustainable and innovative economy.

It definitively positions Hauts-de-France as a region of excellence for industries involved in the ecological transition, thereby strengthening its appeal for strategic industrial investments on a European scale.

A strategic location
for the region's industrial future

The arrival of FertigHy in Languevoisin-Quiquery marks a significant step forward in the Hauts-de-France region’s sustainable reindustrialization strategy. This new plant project is perfectly aligned with regional ambitions for ecological transition and European industrial sovereignty.

With a major investment, cutting-edge technology, and several hundred direct and indirect jobs at stake, this project highlights the region’s ability to attract major industrial projects in the field of decarbonization. It also strengthens the Hauts-de-France region’s position as a European hub for green chemistry and regenerative agriculture.

The ripple effects across the entire agricultural and industrial value chain are expected to generate positive spin-offs for the regional economy, while contributing to the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. FertigHy is thus poised to become a key player in the industrial ecosystem of the Hauts-de-France region, demonstrating that economic performance and environmental excellence can converge to enhance the region’s attractiveness.
