Spin Master converts Meccano’s Calais plant into a center of excellence

10 Feb 2016 | Front page, Advanced Materials

Spin Master, which acquired Meccano’s Calais plant in 2013, is now converting it into a center of excellence where the Canadian toymaker can engineer, develop and manufacture new products.

New process manufacturing capability in Calais

In the battle for market share in Toyland, four key players are at the top of the game. The indomitable Lego leads the pack, followed closely by Mattel, Hasbro—and Spin Master. A relative newcomer to the market, the Canadian group was founded in 1994, acquired Meccano in 2013, and is now converting Meccano’s Calais production site into a center of excellence where it can engineer, develop and manufacture new toys. In addition, Spin Master aims to develop its own process manufacturing capability, with the Northern France plant serving as its production test site. Finally, the facility may be used to test new products before they are sent to sub-contractors for manufacture.

Fast feedback

Another powerful tool in Spin Master’s strategy is the Meccano Lab. Located in the heart of Calais, the Lab invites local children to test toys manufactured at the Meccano plant, generating fast feedback on its latest creations.
