US internet retailer Amazon has announced plans for a fourth logistics center in France at a site in Lauwin Planque near Douai in the north. The center is scheduled to open in the second half of 2013 and will employ up to 2,500 people, including management, at peak periods. It will cover up to 90,000 sq m and provide backup for Amazon’s global operations in Europe. Nord France Invest has been involved in negotiations for over 18 months, with near-daily contacts since June 2012 to get the project up and running quickly. The new centre is the largest single source of local job creation since Toyota’s arrival in Valenciennes in 1997.
