Pure Salmon plans to open the largest RAS* aquaculture salmon farm in Europe in Boulogne-sur Mer, creating160 new jobs.

Pure Salmon is investing €175 million in Hauts-de-France for the largest land-based salmon farm in the EU

Pure Salmon, a company managed by Singapore-based 8F Asset Management, has chosen Boulogne-sur-Mer in Hauts-de-France for its new European site, which will be the largest RAS* aquaculture salmon farm in the European Union. The €175M investment should lead to the creation of 160 new jobs in the region.

Xavier Bertrand, President of the Hauts-de-France region, said:

“The Hauts de France Region has made work and jobs its priority, by supporting people who are working and looking for a job, and by supporting entrepreneurs who create jobs. We are here to support the 8F fund which chose to invest in Hauts-de-France, and more particularly in Boulogne-Sur-Mer! This choice allows us to position ourselves on this innovative, sustainable technology, to further complement the internationally recognized expertise and excellence of Boulogne regarding seafood.”

The first salmon from the farm should reach the market in 2023. Ultimately, the site is expected to generate 10,000 tonnes of salmon per year.

Nord France Invest is supporting every stage of the project, together with the Conseil Régional, the Communauté d’Agglomération du Boulonnais, Boulogne-Développement, l’Etat and Business France and it “[…] is also fully in line with European Commission guidelines for the development of aquaculture production to reduce the European Union’s dependence on imports,” said Didier Guillaume, Minister of Agriculture and Food.

Why have Pure Salmon and 8F chosen Hauts-de-France?

“We have chosen France over other European countries because of its long reputation for producing exceptionally high-quality food, the large salmon consumer base and also for the support and assistance we have received from all levels of government in France,” said Stéphane Farouze, Director of Pure Salmon and President-Founder of 8F Asset Management

As we said earlier, France was the obvious location for Pure Salmon’s new European site, since the country is one of the biggest consumers of salmon in the world. The Hauts-de-France region and more particularly Boulogne-sur-mer was quickly identified by 8F for a number of reasons:

  • Effective and concerted support from all local, regional and national institutions during the different stages of the project, as mentioned in our article yesterday
  • Its geographical and structural advantages:
o The region is situated in the heart of Northern Europe and offers access to a potential market of 80M consumers within a radius of 300km
o Hauts-de-France has an extensive transport network connecting it to the rest of France and neighbouring countries
  • A well-developed and dynamic sector, Boulogne is the number one European hub for processing seafood
  • A first rate logistics infrastructure, allowing immediate access to the main markets
  • A qualified workforce

It is also home to Nausicaá, the largest public aquarium in Europe and an important centre for marine research and conservation.

The seafood sector in Hauts-de-France

With the largest harbourfront in France, the Hauts-de-France knows how to use its strengths to best advantage.

Boulogne-sur-Mer, the number one fishing port and number one European seafood processing hub, is at its epicentre. More than 300,000 tonnes of seafood pass through the port every year.

More than 300 companies specialising in seafood are based in Hauts-de-France, employing more than 6,700 people.

Since the early 2000s, the regional sector (companies and research and training centres) has been structured around the Aquimer competitiveness cluster.
