Louvre-Lens tops the one-million-visitor mark

13 Feb 2014 | A region on the move

Wednesday, January 29, 2014: Xavier Dectot, director of Louvre-Lens, welcomes the museum’s one-millionth visitor.

Brisk attendance

“We’re not looking to keep up this pace as much as find our own rhythm,” says museum director Xavier Dectot, who was not expecting to reach the one-million figure until September 2014. Nevertheless, he is delighted with the “incredible buy-in” of visitors, who come not only from the local region but also from all over France and abroad. Almost 14 months on, the museum has established a strong regional visitor base, with more than one in two visitors coming from Northern France. Yet the Louvre-Lens is also gaining an international reputation: already some 20% of visitors come from 70 different countries.

Popular exhibitions

In addition to its Gallery of Time (Galerie du temps), whose innovative staging and educational exhibits are very popular, the museum’s exhibition schedule is attracting a large and increasingly loyal audience. Almost 280,000 entries were recorded for its first two temporary exhibitions, “Renaissance” (winter 2012-2013) and “Rubens’ Europe” (summer 2013). The latest exhibition, “The Etruscans and the Mediterranean: The City of Cerveteri,” runs through March 10. It will be followed by “The Disasters of War. 1800-2014,” starting on May 28 as part of the commemorations of the First World War centenary.
