Healthcare: World’s smallest pacemaker implanted in Lille

10 Mar 2016 | A region on the move, Health Nutrition

Medtronic’s Micra TPS is the world’s smallest pacemaker. After years of research by its US manufacturer, the device has recently been implanted in patients in France—starting in Lille.

Major healthcare innovation in Lille

Lille University Hospital Center (CHRU), recognized throughout France as a leader in cardiology, has achieved a major breakthrough for healthcare in the region. The Micra TPS pacemaker has already been implanted in four patients, and 15 more are scheduled for surgery.

Cardiology a specialty in Northern France

The tiny device—the size of “a large vitamin,” according to Medtronic—offers a number of advantages. Unlike the last generation of pacemakers, the Micra TPS does not require major surgery: it can be inserted through a small incision in the groin, leaving only a slight scar. And because it can be implanted without wires (known as “leads”), the risk of infection is significantly reduced.

How does it work? The tiny device acts as a “cardio-messenger” system, connecting wirelessly to a WiFi or GSM network and relaying data to a secure site that can be accessed by doctors.

It’s just one more sign of the level of excellence achieved by Lille’s CHRU and the healthcare industry in Northern France.
