The Japanese carmaker has announced plans to transfer production of part of its Yaris exports for sale in North America—around 25,000 cars a year—from Japan to France. They will be sold in the US, Canada and Puerto Rico.

“This decision reflects the quality of cars produced by our team here at TMMF,” says company head Makoto Sano. “But it also represents a major source of new business for our plant and will enhance our position as a major exporter in France.”

The plant plans to invest an additional €8 million to adapt its production lines to North American specifications, including a 1.5-liter gasoline-powered engine, an automatic gearbox, adjustments to rear bumpers and other components regulated by local requirements.

For Didier Leroy, Chairman and CEO of Toyota Motor Europe, “Exporting gasoline-powered Yaris to North America marks a further consolidation of TMMF's role in Toyota's international structure.”

Based in Valenciennes, Toyota Motor Manufacturing France has been producing the Yaris since January 31, 2001. The site currently makes 1,014 Yaris cars a day, including 235 hybrids, for markets in Europe. On April 1 this year it celebrated its 2,100,000th made-in-France Yaris.
