Louvre-Lens—200,000 visitors and counting

Strong turnout exceeds museum’s targets

Louvre Lens -museum - Lille Region

Louvre-Lens, the all-new regional branch of the legendary Paris museum, has been an instant hit with the public. Just two months after the ribbon-cutting at this unique site in Northern France, the gallery has already welcomed its 200,000th visitor. Some 5,000 art enthusiasts attended opening night on December 4, and a non-stop Open House weekend on December 8-9 drew no fewer than 36,000 visitors over a 32-hour period—a powerful testament to the appeal of this exceptional museum.

And its popularity extends well beyond national borders. Visitors to date hail from 55 countries, starting with nearby Belgium, Germany, the UK and the Netherlands. But culture buffs have also streamed in from farther afield—the US, Japan and even China.

If you haven’t yet visited, now’s the time: the museum’s Renaissance exhibition, on view through March 11, features Leonardo da Vinci’s Virgin and Child with Saint Anne. Next up: an exhibition dedicated to the work of Rubens, starting in mid-May.
