International investment in France—stronger than ever in 2015

29 Mar 2016 | Front page, A region on the move

Business France’s review of foreign direct investment (FDI) in 2015 ranks host regions across France, with statistics that confirm the country’s appeal for foreign-owned businesses.

In 2015, 962 physical investment decisions created or maintained 33,682 jobs—a five-year record—with an average 19 decisions a week, and new jobs were up 27% over 2014.

Northern France did particularly well, accounting for 25% of total French jobs created or maintained by FDI. This makes us the country’s second-ranked host region in job numbers, immediately behind the Paris region. And we rank #1 for the number of jobs created or maintained in manufacturing.

Nationwide figures show foreign investors coming from 53 countries, up from 47 in 2014. Most hail from the European Union—60% of total investment projects—followed by North America at 22% and Asia at 13%, with fairly stable percentages year on year. A review by nationality ranks US companies first, followed by German, Italian, British and Japanese businesses.
