Lille researcher Dr. François Pattou is charting new territory in the fight against diabetes and obesity, thanks to a ground-breaking sample collection.

Diabetes: 15 years of research at Lille hospital yields new insights

Dr. François Pattou, head of general and endocrine surgery at Lille University Hospital Center (CHRU) and a researcher at France’s National Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM), has studied type 2 diabetes and obesity for 15 years. He has shown that bariatric surgery can improve and even treat type 2 diabetes, though the mechanism responsible for these benefits has yet to be identified.

The only sample collection of its kind

Tissue contributions, made before and after bariatric surgery by some 1,500 local patients with severe diabetes and/or obesity, have enabled Dr. Pattou to amass one of the world’s largest collections of samples for research into diabetes and obesity. For the first time, data taken directly from human subjects is being used to study these pathologies.

Financial backing from Cœur et Artères

All patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes will benefit from Dr. Pattou’s innovative approach. In December 2015, France’s Cœur et Artères Foundation awarded a three-year grant to his program, which the Foundation has classified as a programme d’excellence
