Luxembourg-based ArcelorMittal has announced that it will invest €40 million in its Northern France sites—yet another sign of the region’s key role in this global steelmaker’s strategy.

ArcelorMittal will invest €40 million in its Dunkerque steel mill

Dunkerque site ranks as most productive in France

At seven sq km, the Dunkerque mill is ArcelorMittal’s largest and most productive site in France. “We’ve budgeted €54 million for current and future projects at AMAL, and €40 million of that is earmarked for Dunkerque and Mardyck," said Eric Niedziela, CEO of ArcelorMittal Atlantique and Lorraine (AMAL). “Of that €40 million, we’ll spend €16 million solely on Blast Furnace 4, which is still one of the most powerful blast furnaces in the world.” Output from the plant is sold primarily to the automotive sector, including Toyota, Hyundai and Honda. In 2015 ArcelorMittal put €92 million into the Dunkerque site, and since 2006 the steelmaker has invested an impressive €500 million in its Northern France facilities—a sign of the region’s key role in its strategy.

    Creating jobs

ArcelorMittal’s eight sites—Dunkerque, Mardyck, Florange, Basse-Indre, Desvres, Montataire, Mouzon and Dudelange—in its Atlantique and Lorraine region employ a total of 8,000 workers, with 4,100 at Dunkerque and Mardyck alone. In 2015 the group added 345 employees, and it announced in a press release that it will continue hiring in 2016.
